The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has implemented strategies to alleviate the challenges that students and parents/guardians may encounter as a result of the recent increase in mandatory fees. In July, the university announced a fee hike set to take effect from September 1.

For new undergraduate students in courses without a lab/studio, the sessional mandatory charge is now ₦‎126,325, and for courses with labs or studios, it’s ₦‎176,325 for one academic session.

Returning students face charges of ₦‎100,750 for courses without labs and ₦‎140,250 for those with access to labs and studios. Medical students are required to pay ₦‎190,250.

This fee hike led to protests among students, with police using tear gas to disperse them. UNILAG’s vice-chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, addressed the situation by emphasizing that the fee increase was necessary to maintain educational quality.

She also highlighted measures aimed at making fee payment more manageable, such as installment plans, adopted students, work-study programs, and an indigent package.

Ogunsola explained, “We have introduced installment payments, where students pay 50% upon enrollment, 20% by exam time, and the remaining 30% for the second semester. Accommodation options are also available without interruption. No returning student will drop out if they come to us, thanks to these measures.”
