Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday their decision to part ways with manager Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season due to the team’s struggles in the Bundesliga title race.

The decision, described as mutual, follows discussions between Tuchel and Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Despite Tuchel’s contract originally running until 2025, he will leave the club on June 30 this year.

The club aims to embark on a “new sporting direction” with a new coach next season, according to CEO Dreesen. Tuchel’s departure comes after a series of setbacks, including three consecutive defeats, notably a 3-0 loss to league rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

With 12 games remaining in the season, Bayern currently trails behind Xabi Alonso’s side by eight points, who remain unbeaten in the campaign. Leverkusen’s 32-game unbeaten streak matches a record previously held by Hansi Flick’s Bayern.

Tuchel’s dismissal follows a pattern set by his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann, who was fired in March last year when Bayern was in second place in the league.

Tuchel was appointed as Bayern’s coach following his departure from Chelsea in late 2022, with the task of revitalizing the team’s season and competing across all competitions.

However, Bayern faced challenges throughout Tuchel’s tenure, including exits from the domestic cup and the Champions League. Despite the signing of Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern’s performance in the league fell short of expectations, and they were unexpectedly eliminated from the German cup by third-division side Saarbruecken.
