The last governorship election in Kwara State which produced Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq was conducted on March 9, 2019 and he was sworn in on May 29, 2019.
Abdulrazaq who got a total Number of 331,546 votes Defeated Hon. Abdulrazaq Atunwa running on the platform of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).
With the election just two years away, politicians are already in trenches, plotting how the next governor will emerge and aspirants with interest to rule Kwara State in 2023 have been coming out to be identified.

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq is the current Governor of Kwara State, He was born in Ilorin West Local Government. AbdulRazaq is the son of Alh. A. G. F. AbdulRazaq SAN., the first northern lawyer in Nigeria.
Abdulrazaq attended Capital School, Kaduna between 1966 and 1968; Bishop Smith Memorial School Ilorin between 1970 and 1971, and Government College Kaduna where he is said to have earned his WASC in 1976.
AbdulRazaq joined politics in 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy. In 2011, he unsuccessfully contested for the governorship election in Kwara State on the platform of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), again he contested unsuccessfully for Kwara Central Senatorial District on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in both 2011 and 2015.
Abdulrazaq won the gubernatorial primary election of the All Progressive Congress for Kwara State in October 2018.
Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq was elected to the Office of the Governor of Kwara State at the 2019 governorship election held on March 9, 2019 and sworn in on May 29, 2019.
Rt. Hon. Razaq Atunwa
Razak Atunwa was born on the 17th October 1969 in Ilorin, He is a Former member of the Nigerian House of Representatives who represent Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency.
When he was 36 year old, Atunwa was appointed as the commissioner for Land and Housing in Kwara state, in August 2005, Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs ( 2006 – 2007), Commissioner for Works and Transport (2007 – 2009) and Commissioner for Finance ( 2009 – 2010).
Hon Atunwa has Immense Governance experience in Kwara state after working in 4 different ministries in his thirties.
In 2011, he was elected into the Kwara state house of assembly to represent Owode/Onire Constituency of Kwara State on the (PDP) platform and was later unanimously elected Speaker of the Assembly at the inauguration of the 7th legislature.
Hon Atunwa was elected as a Member of the Federal House of Representatives of the National Assembly to represent Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency in 2015.
Razak Atunwa contested in the PDP Gubernatorial primaries in Kwara state on the 1st of October 2019 and was duly elected by 1,555 delegates making him the PDP’s flag bearer in the Kwara Governorship Election.
Atunwa is Currently a member of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).
Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem
Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem is a popular serial gubernatorial aspirant in the last 3 political dispensation, He is a former Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin and Chairman, Federal Character Commission (FCC). He contested for the Kwara gubernatorial seat in 2011, 2015, 2019.
Prof. Abdulraheem is currently a Member of the Kwara All Progressive Congress (APC) and he is currently one of the Party’s Chieftains.
Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi
Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi is a former Governor of Kwara State who was elected in January 1992 through the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, and was removed from office by the administration of General Sani Abacha in November 1993.
Shaaba who is from Kwara North Senatorial District was one of the Gubernatorial Aspirants of the People’s Democratic party in the 2019 General Election.
The Former Governor of Kwara State is currently a Member of PDP.
Zakari Mohammed is a Member of The Kwara People’s Democratic Party (PDP), He is a former member of Federal House of Representatives who represents Barauten/Kaiama Federal Constituency of Kwara State.
Zakari a Journalist who turned politician is one the Loyalist of Nigerian Renowned Politician Saraki and he is from Kwara North Senatorial district.
Zakari is Currently a Member of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).
Bolaji Abdullah is a Politician and a Writer from Kwara State. He served in the cabinet of the Ex-Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, as the Honourable Minister of Youth Development in July 2011, and defunct as the Minister of Sports.
Bolaji as subsequently appointed first as the Special Assistant, Communication and Strategy to the then Executive Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2003, and defunct as the Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy in 2005. He was then appointed as the Kwara State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology from 2007 to 2011.
In December 2016, Abdullahi was announced as the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress. On the 1st of August, 2018, Abdullahi officially resigned as the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress and defected from the party.
Bolaji Abdullah is From Ilorin west Local Government and he is one of the PDP Gubernatorial Aspirants in the 2019 Election in Kwara state.
Omoluabi is currently a Member of People’s Democratic party (PDP).
Shuaib Yaman Abdullahi
Alhaji Shuaib Yaman Abdullahi is a governorship Aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), in the 2019 general election in Kwara State.
Yaman is currently the Federal Commissioner For Revenue Mobilization allocation and fiscal Commission. He is a Chieftain of the ruling party in Kwara State.
Hon. Ali Ahmad
Hon. Ali Ahmad is the immediate Past Speaker of Kwara House of Assembly, He is also the former lawmaker representing Ilorin South/East Constituency at the Kwara State House of Assembly.
Ali Ahmad was Part of the 10 Aspirants Who contested for the Governorship Position under the platform of the People’s Democratic party (PDP) in 2019.
Ali Ahmad is currently a Bonafide Member of PDP.
