David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has stated that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu inherited a staggering N14 trillion worth of road projects nationwide.

Umahi revealed that these road projects, which numbered 2,604 and stretched across 18,000 kilometers, were carried over from the previous administration under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

During a press briefing at the presidential villa, Umahi disclosed that approximately N4 trillion has already been disbursed to contractors by the current administration.

However, a substantial funding gap of N10 trillion remains to complete these projects.

To address this financial shortfall, Umahi indicated that funding sources amounting to N4 trillion have been identified, leaving a significant gap of N6 trillion. He also highlighted the need to terminate some of these long-standing projects, some of which have been ongoing for up to 20 years, without a defined source of funding.

Umahi emphasized the importance of prioritizing road projects and urged Tinubu to encourage the National Assembly to allocate adequate funds for these crucial infrastructure developments.

He raised concerns about the inadequacy of appropriations, where projects costing billions of Naira receive significantly less in funding, ultimately benefiting the contractors more than the infrastructure’s quality and longevity.
