Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has embarked on a journey from Nigeria to the United States to participate in the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The official announcement of his departure was made by the presidency in a statement released on Sunday.

This marks Tinubu’s debut appearance at the UNGA since taking office as president in May.

During his visit, he is scheduled to engage in discussions with various international leaders, including United States President Joe Biden and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union Commission, on the sidelines of the summit.

Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s spokesperson, also disclosed that Tinubu will meet with Brad Smith, the global president of Microsoft, and Nick Clegg, head of global affairs for Meta Technologies. These discussions will center on strategies to enhance Nigeria’s digital transformation and harness artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, Tinubu is set to deliver his inaugural national address at the UN headquarters on September 19.

In addition to his UN activities, the Nigerian president will address American business leaders at the US Chamber of Commerce and participate in the NASDAQ closing ceremony, making him the first African president to do so.

The 78th UNGA session is scheduled to take place from September 18 to 26 in New York, with the theme for this year being “Rebuilding trust and rekindling global solidarity: Advancing action on the 2030 agenda and its sustainable development goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.”
