Tinubu renames national theatre after Wole Soyinka

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Theatre in Lagos to honor Wole Soyinka, marking the Nobel laureate’s upcoming 90th birthday on July 13.
In a birthday message celebrating Soyinka’s literary achievements and commitment to human dignity and justice, Tinubu expressed delight in renaming the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.
Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize in 1986, was praised for his resilience, having overcome prostate cancer and continuing to impact global discourse on democracy and justice.
Tinubu highlighted Soyinka’s contributions during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, including his efforts in exile to oppose the military regime and advocate for the validation of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
He described Soyinka as an influential figure beyond Nigeria, noting his activism against apartheid in South Africa and racism in the United States.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Soyinka a happy 90th birthday and expressing hope that his legacy will inspire a nation where all individuals can pursue their dreams freely.
