President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated a committee aimed at conducting a thorough reform of the police force.
The announcement was made by Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed, following a meeting of the Nigeria police council chaired by Tinubu.
During this meeting, Kayode Egbetokun was confirmed as the substantive inspector-general of police (IGP).
The committee, comprised of key figures such as the minister of police affairs, national security adviser, chairman of the police service commission, and the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, will focus on identifying and addressing gaps in Nigeria’s 1999 constitution related to the Nigerian Police Force. The ultimate goal is to implement technology and manpower improvements.
Furthermore, Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasized the historic lack of significant police reforms since the force’s establishment in 1861.
The newly appointed IGP stressed the importance of technology-driven and community-based policing, along with the need for adequate funding.
This small committee will concentrate on these critical areas to initiate the much-needed reforms.
