President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, according to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Instead, the President approved the proper application of the law that governs the tenure of the office, as required.

In a statement released on Friday, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that the IGP’s appointment is set for a four-year term.

“The Nigeria Police Force has noted various misleading reports and misinterpretations regarding the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police. We wish to categorically state that President Bola Tinubu did not extend the IGP’s tenure but rather approved the lawful application of the rules governing the office,” the statement read.

Adejobi further addressed misinformation circulating on social media and in the news, clarifying that an appointment letter dated November 3, 2023, was issued to the IGP shortly after his confirmation by the Police Council. This letter clearly states that the President had approved a four-year tenure for the IGP, in line with Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He also emphasized that the IGP does not need to seek any tenure extension as he has not yet completed the years specified in his appointment letter. Adejobi added, “The ongoing spread of false information is the work of pessimists and mischief makers who aim to cast doubt on the office and character of the IGP for their own motives and financial gain.”
