Tinubu concludes tenure as ECOWAS Chairman

President Bala Tinubu’s term as chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government concludes today (Sunday).
The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority is being held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he is expected to hand over leadership to a new chairman.
Tinubu was unanimously elected as chairman in July 2024 during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
During his tenure, the Nigerian leader faced numerous challenges, particularly military coups in member states.
Initially, President Tinubu took a firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, leading to the imposition of sanctions on these countries.
However, the sanctions were later lifted as the sub-regional body opted for a more peaceful approach to resolving these issues.
