Ten-man Manchester United triumphed 5-3 in a penalty shootout against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round after a 1-1 draw following extra time at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The match, featuring the two most successful clubs in FA Cup history, was a thrilling 120 minutes packed with goals, missed opportunities, a red card, and drama. Manchester United initially took the lead, but a red card and Gabriel Magalhães’ equalizer leveled the game. Despite their numerical advantage, Arsenal failed to capitalize on their chances, with Manchester United ultimately securing victory in the shootout.

The game came to life in the second half when Bruno Fernandes gave Manchester United the lead in the 52nd minute. Following a counter-attack, Fernandes finished expertly from the edge of the box after a brilliant run and pass by Alejandro Garnacho.

The game took another turn when Diego Dalot was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Mikel Merino, leaving Manchester United with ten men. Arsenal quickly seized the advantage, equalizing two minutes later when Magalhães’ shot deflected off Matthijs de Ligt and into the net.

The Gunners had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty after minimal contact between Harry Maguire and Kai Havertz. However, Martin Ødegaard’s penalty was expertly saved by Man United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir was in fine form, making two key saves to deny Declan Rice, and Havertz missed a golden chance from six yards out as United managed to force extra time.

In extra time, both sides pushed for a winner. Leandro Trossard had his shot deflected over the bar by de Ligt, while Joshua Zirkzee’s effort was saved by Arsenal’s David Raya, leading to penalties.

In the shootout, United triumphed 5-3, with Bayindir replicating his earlier heroics by saving Havertz’s penalty. Zirkzee then scored the decisive penalty, sending Manchester United through to the fourth round.

The result sees Arsenal exit the FA Cup at the third-round stage for the second consecutive year, while Manchester United await their next opponent in the fourth-round draw.
