Ondo State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Olubunmi Osadahun, was assaulted over the weekend in the Arigidi Akoko area while overseeing the distribution of relief supplies aimed at mitigating the impact of the government’s removal of fuel subsidies.

Reports indicate that members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the council area attacked the commissioner, alleging that the distribution process lacked transparency.

A video circulating on social media captured the moment when a man used a blue chair to strike the commissioner, resulting in her injury. She was promptly taken to the hospital for medical care.

An eyewitness stated that the attacker, a party member from Arigidi in Akoko North West, engaged in the ongoing distribution of relief supplies. However, the motive behind his attack on the commissioner remains unclear.

In an interview, the commissioner’s daughter, Dr. (Mrs.) Jumoke Bakare, confirmed her mother’s hospitalization, stating that she was unable to provide further details at the moment.

The state government had initiated the distribution of relief supplies, with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu emphasizing that the initiative was intended to benefit all residents regardless of their political affiliations. The distribution aimed to provide 1,200 bags of rice to 6,000 households in Akoko South East Local Government area.

It’s worth noting that the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the state had raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the relief distribution process. They called on the government to ensure transparency and equitable distribution of relief items.

The CSOs also highlighted the importance of accountability and inclusivity, particularly for the benefit of vulnerable citizens affected by the removal of fuel subsidies. They urged the governor to address the situation to prevent a recurrence of incidents like the EndSARS protests, which saw the looting of COVID-19 relief items stored in the state.”
