Elected governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have advised President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to relinquish power if they are unable to address the current hardships in the country.

This advice follows the federal government’s response to the governors’ earlier warning about Nigeria’s potential trajectory towards a crisis similar to that of Venezuela if immediate action is not taken.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had previously blamed the PDP for the country’s woes, questioning the moral authority of PDP governors to criticize the Tinubu-led government, particularly over alleged salary arrears.

In a statement issued by the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Cyril Maduabum, the governors defended their stance as a patriotic duty, emphasizing that the APC-led government should either unite Nigerians for sustainable solutions or step down.

While acknowledging that their states fare comparatively better, the PDP governors recalled the recent call by Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, for collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments to tackle security and economic challenges.

They reiterated their support for the creation of state police and urged collaborative efforts between monetary and fiscal authorities to find appropriate solutions. The governors warned of dire consequences if urgent steps are not taken to address the country’s challenges.

Despite commending President Tinubu for convening a special meeting to discuss these issues, the governors stressed the need for tangible follow-through on resolutions.

They emphasized that the hardship faced by Nigerians transcends tribal, religious, or party lines and called on the APC-led federal government to take decisive action or gracefully step aside.

The governors rejected attempts by APC officials to discredit their intervention, asserting their commitment to finding lasting solutions in collaboration with the president. They reaffirmed their belief in cooperative federalism while urging President Tinubu to deploy his best efforts to lead Nigeria out of its current predicament.
