Sports Minister Summons NFF Over Poor Results in World Cup Qualifier

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has requested an in-depth technical analysis from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) in light of the Super Eagles’ lackluster performance during the June FIFA window.

During this period, the Super Eagles only managed to secure one point out of a potential six, drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan, marking their third and fourth matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

With just three points out of a possible twelve from the four games played so far, the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, look bleak.

Expressing his disappointment, Minister Enoh highlighted the considerable support extended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to the NFF, alongside the positive working relationship between the Ministry and the Federation.

“The recent outcomes are unsatisfactory,” Senator Enoh remarked. “Despite the significant backing from President Tinubu and the high hopes of Nigerian football enthusiasts, the Super Eagles have failed to meet expectations.”

He stressed the need for the NFF to furnish a comprehensive technical report elucidating the reasons behind the team’s underperformance and justifying why there should be no repercussions for the letdown, which has disappointed both the government and the Nigerian populace.

Enoh emphasized that Nigerian football fans demand answers and accountability from the NFF. “Our supporters are passionate and dedicated. They deserve an explanation for the national team’s failure to meet expected standards since the last AFCON,” he added.
