Spain claimed the gold medal in the men’s football event at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, defeating host nation France 5-3 after extra time in a thrilling match on Friday.

The electrifying clash at the Parc des Princes saw France come back from a two-goal deficit to level the score at 3-3, pushing the game into extra time.

Spain, however, rallied to score in each half of the extra time, securing a well-earned victory.

This gold marks Spain’s first Olympic men’s football title in 34 years, following their last win in 1992.

France initially took the lead in the 11th minute through Enzo Millot, but Spain responded with three goals in just ten minutes. Barcelona’s Fermín López scored twice, and Álex Baena added a spectacular curling free kick, putting La Roja’s under-23 squad on course for victory.

Despite this, France, managed by Thierry Henry, mounted a dramatic late comeback with goals from Maghnes Akliouche and a 93rd-minute penalty by Jean-Philipe Mateta, forcing the match into extra time.

Spain ultimately clinched the win with two clinical goals from substitute Sergio Camello Perez, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Spanish contingent.

This latest triumph adds to Spain’s recent football successes, as they currently hold the men’s European Championship title, the women’s World Cup, and the men’s under-19 European title.
