Vice President Kashim Shettima has called upon political officeholders to place the welfare, unity, and advancement of the nation ahead of personal or sectional gains.

According to a statement by Mr. Olusola Abiola, Director of Information at the Office of the Vice President, Shettima delivered this counsel during a reception held to celebrate the achievements and appointment of Sen. George Akume as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The reception was organized by the North-Central Governors’ Forum.

Shettima urged both current and aspiring political officeholders to emulate the virtues embodied by the SGF. In a message titled ‘A Life of Honor’, the Vice President praised Akume’s character as an embodiment of unity, loyalty, and integrity.

He lauded Akume’s enduring commitment to a united Nigeria and underscored how this philosophy had shaped his political journey. Shettima highlighted that Akume’s approach to public service was underpinned by core values such as justice, fairness, and equality.

Shettima emphasized the significance of character in the realm of politics, stating that certain positions demanded qualities that extended beyond academic and professional qualifications. He used Akume’s example to illustrate the importance of cooperation and steadfastness in the political arena.

Shettima applauded Akume’s exceptional ability to foster unity among diverse religious, ethnic, and regional groups within the nation. Distinguished figures present at the event included former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ben Kalu, Senate Leader Bamidele Opeyemi, and various Governors and Ministers-designate.
