The Senate has initiated discussions on the 2024 budget following President Bola Tinubu’s presentation of the N27.5 trillion budget to the National Assembly.

After swiftly passing its first reading in both the Senate and House of Representatives, Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that the budget’s presentation marked its first reading, prompting the start of general debate during Thursday’s plenary.

Bamidele urged fellow lawmakers to endorse the second reading for consideration by the Appropriation Committee, highlighting the budget’s focus on addressing electricity challenges, procuring vaccines, constructing major roads, and advancing railway projects.

Expressing optimism, Senator Joel Thomas of Delta South anticipated that the budget, once approved, would instill renewed hope for Nigerians and spur economic development.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, a PDP member, supported the bill’s passage while urging government support for projects in her constituency.

Many senators contributing to the debate echoed support for the Appropriation’s approval.
