Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed that alcohol will not be permitted during the 2034 FIFA World Cup, maintaining its strict prohibition laws.

In an interview with Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) radio, Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the UK, emphasized that the ban will apply across all venues, including hotels, restaurants, and stadiums.

“We don’t allow alcohol at the moment,” the envoy stated. “Plenty of fun can be had without it – it’s not 100% necessary. If you want to drink after you leave, you’re welcome to, but for now, we don’t have alcohol.”

Alcohol consumption is largely prohibited in Saudi Arabia, with strict penalties including fines, imprisonment, and deportation. However, in 2024, the country announced plans to open its first liquor store, strictly limited to non-Muslims.

Saudi Arabia is not the first World Cup host to regulate alcohol sales. During the 2022 tournament, Qatar banned alcohol consumption in stadiums, limiting it to designated fan zones and licensed venues.

Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed as the sole host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup in December 2024, after submitting the only bid for the tournament.
