Pochettino Calls for Simplification of VAR System After Liverpool Goal Controversy

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has expressed the need for simplifying the VAR system, citing trust in the technology but concerns about its implementation.

This comes in the wake of a costly goal error during Liverpool’s recent match against Tottenham, where VAR operator Darren England mistakenly denied Liverpool an opening goal.

Pochettino supports VAR technology but believes it should be streamlined.

He mentioned, “I trust in the VAR and how we manage the VAR. I trust in the car but the driver? That is the problem.” His proposal involves simplifying the use of VAR, particularly for offside and goal-line decisions, while leaving other on-pitch calls to the referee and assistants.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou acknowledged that Liverpool was unfairly denied a “legitimate goal” due to the mistake, and referees’ body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited admitted it was a “significant human error.” Despite calls for a replay, there is no indication that the Premier League is considering one at this time.

Postecoglou also urged understanding and restraint in criticizing VAR operator Darren England, emphasizing that it was a human error.
