Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, has declared his support for the nationwide protest set for August.

Speaking on Sunday, the former Anambra State Governor emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution grants citizens the right to protest.

Obi urged that any demonstrations should remain non-violent and lawful. He pointed to widespread hunger and youth despair as the driving forces behind the protest, and called on Nigerian authorities to listen to the concerns of the protesters.

During a visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area, Obi told Channels Television, “The Nigerian Constitution allows for protest. All I ask is that those protesting do so within the law and in a civil manner that shows we live by legal standards as a nation.”

Acknowledging the country’s current difficulties, Obi added, “We need to listen to what Nigerians are going through, and I appreciate our governor (Alex Otti) for doing so. It is important.”

Obi reiterated that there is nothing wrong with people engaging in protests, noting, “Protests are common everywhere globally. People even protest in my house. It is crucial for us to listen to those who are protesting and understand their grievances.”

He also called on security agencies to ensure the safety of the protesters while operating within legal boundaries. “Security agencies should manage the situation within the law without being overbearing,” Obi said. “Engage with the protesters—that is what governance is about. There is nothing wrong with that.”
