Peter Obi Seeks Electricity Subsidy For Less-Privileged Nigerians

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, emphasized the need for the Federal Government to provide subsidies on electricity tariffs for less-privileged Nigerians during his visit to Bauchi State in North-East Nigeria.
He made these remarks while inaugurating a borehole project in the Sabon Layi Community on the outskirts of Bauchi metropolis.
Obi argued that any necessary increase in tariffs should primarily target individuals with the financial means to bear the burden, rather than adding to the struggles of those already facing economic difficulties.
He stressed the importance of supporting small businesses and promoting economic growth, emphasizing the need for a concentrated effort to generate more power.
Meanwhile, on April 3, 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised electricity tariffs for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily, classified under Band A.
This increase, which has faced heavy criticism from many Nigerians due to its immediate impact amidst ongoing hardships, will see customers paying N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the current N66.
