Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, has dismissed circulating rumors that he intends to leave the party.

Through his social media platform X, Obi affirmed his unwavering commitment and loyalty to the Labour Party.

Recently, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, announced the establishment of new directorates by the party’s National Working Committee, including the “Obidient Directorate” aimed at integrating members of the movement into the LP seamlessly.

This decision sparked discontent among several members, who released a statement condemning the party’s move and distancing themselves from the new directorate.

Responding to Abure’s announcement, Obi emphasized that the Obidient Movement transcends any single political party and cannot be confined to one.

Subsequently, rumors emerged that Obi might leave the party.

On Thursday, the former Anambra State governor addressed these rumors: “A journalist at Abuja airport asked me if my recent statement on the Obidient Movement indicated my departure from the Labour Party. For those concerned and the public, I want to clarify:

“I remain a faithful, committed, and loyal member of the Labour Party. As a leader, my goal is to work closely with other leaders to reconcile our members, collaborate with like-minded individuals and parties nationwide, and strengthen the party to drive the rebuilding of a new Nigeria.

“My recent statement aimed to address concerns from our numerous supporters, many of whom are not affiliated with any political party but are eager for a new Nigeria. Our objective remains that a new Nigeria is possible.”
