Peter Obi condemns attack on NLC president in Imo
Ajaero was allegedly forcefully taken from the Imo council secretariat of the NLC in Owerri by heavily armed police officers on Wednesday.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming 2023 elections, has strongly criticized the assault on Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which took place in Imo state.
Ajaero was allegedly forcefully taken from the Imo council secretariat of the NLC in Owerri by heavily armed police officers on Wednesday.
The NLC claimed that Ajaero was physically assaulted and blindfolded following his arrest by security operatives.
However, the Imo police command denied the arrest, stating that Ajaero was placed under protective custody to prevent a potential mob attack.
The NLC had announced plans to halt activities in Imo from November 1, protesting against reported workers’ rights violations. Ajaero accused the Imo government of failing to pay some workers for 20 months.
Expressing his dismay, Peter Obi highlighted the incident as a distressing reflection of the prevailing lawlessness, impunity, and disorder in the country.
He emphasized the need for a better Nigeria, free from abuses of power and the flagrant disregard for citizens’ rights.
