The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has conveyed its disappointment with the recent Supreme Court judgment.
The apex court upheld the decision of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, confirming the victory of Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi had previously filed petitions challenging President Tinubu’s election victory.
However, in September, the Tribunal, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, ruled that the petitions lacked merit and upheld President Tinubu’s return.
Unsatisfied with the Tribunal’s judgment, the LP Presidential Candidate and the PDP filed 86 grounds of appeal at the Supreme Court to contest the ruling.
The Supreme Court, on Thursday, dismissed their petitions on the grounds of lacking merit.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed alarm and disappointment, stating that the court’s reasoning raised concerns.
PDP criticized the court for not upholding the provisions of the law, as they had expected, particularly regarding the 1999 Constitution’s requirements for a Presidential election winner, including the statutory 25 percent of votes in the FCT.
They also raised concerns about electoral rule violations, manipulations, and result alterations by the APC.
Ologunagba further stated that the Supreme Court’s acceptance of technicalities over serious allegations of forgery, falsehood, and perjury has left Nigerians disheartened.
The judgment has shaken confidence in the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, as the last resort for the common man.
Despite this setback, PDP remains resolute and encourages Nigerians not to be discouraged.
They urge citizens to continue their pursuit of a credible electoral system that truly reflects the will of the people.
