The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to safeguard the nation’s democracy, emphasizing that Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary should serve as a reminder to protect democratic principles and the rule of law.

The PDP accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undoing the progress achieved during Nigeria’s earlier years, stating that the independence and sovereignty of any nation are rooted in the rights, liberties, and freedoms of its citizens.

The opposition party lamented that the APC had reversed the achievements of the founding fathers and the significant progress made during the PDP’s 16-year governance, a period often regarded as Nigeria’s “Golden Years.”

The PDP emphasized the importance of citizens’ rights, participation in governance through transparent electoral processes, and accountable government.

They criticized the APC for what they perceive as authoritarian tendencies, disregard for citizens’ welfare, suppression of dissenting voices, and the elevation of electoral malpractices and human rights violations as state policies.
