[Op_Ed] : Advancing Quality Representation — A Review Of Maryam Yusuf Aladi’s Blueprint

It is quite unusual to see an aspirant to the legislative House, even at the national level, putting out a statement of intention, otherwise known as a blueprint or plan. Often, would be lawmakers merely contest elections and expect to go with the flow when they arrive at the lawmaking chambers.

However, Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi, an aspirant for the Ilorin South Constituency seat in the Kwara State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dared to be different with the way and manner she has approached her campaigns so far, clearly articulating her plans and putting in public domains her ideas of what quality representation entails. She has now gone a step further by putting her thought in a document tagged, “A Pact With My People.”

A small document of about 12 pages, the draft blueprint of the would be lawmaker reflects her understanding of the critical role of the legislative arm and outlines what would be her priorities if elected.

Considering the fact that a sizeable number of the membership of the legislative assemblies do not even understand the fundamental role they are expected to play; it is heartwarming that the first goal of Hajia Maryam Aladi focuses on the germane issue of delivering effective lawmaking. According to her, ” lobbying to push legal reforms on issues…such as youth development, education, girl child and women empowerment, rights of widows, protection of child rights, legislations to discourage violence against women, healthcare and improved livelihood.” The specific choice of the issues she seeks to focus on as a lawmaker clearly proves that she knows out to pick and concentrate on specific priorities.

What is more, the issues she seeks to focus on are in themselves strategic to the development of her Constituency and, by extension, Kwara State. At a time everyone is concerned about youth restiveness and the general challenges confronting young people, the issue of youth development should occupy a central place in the minds of any serious-minded politician.

Other areas Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi intends to prioritize, such as education, women empowerment and the rights of children and widows, show that the would be lawmaker would be more concerned about the plights of the most vulnerable members of our society. This is indeed a commendable plan owing to the often embarrassing lack of direction exhibited by many legislators with scant attention paid to the wellbeing of the downtrodden.

This genuine show of empathy as reflected in her constant reference to the welfare of the people is an indication that the people of Ilorin South would stand to benefit from what the aspirant herself described as “inclusive opportunity.” This is why it is important that she gets a chance to actualize her laudable plans for the Constituency that she has proven to love beyond any shred out doubt.

Finally, the government of Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has shown since coming to power in 2019 that it is one that is well committed to transparency. This is one ideal that Hajia Maryam Yusuf Aladi seeks to key into under her goal 3 when she said she will provide “transparent oversight that represent the values of
truth and honesty in leadership as reflected in the governance style of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.”

With her documented commitment to advance inclusive opportunity for Ilorin South Constituency and foster transparency in governance, it goes without saying that the presence of people with the kind of Hajia Maryam Yusuf’s mindset in our Legislative House would greatly help Kwara State as a whole to thrive. Moreover, with focused legislative interventions in the areas she has itemized, there is no doubt that the present government would have a stronger ally in the House in its quest to build a dynamic State that meets the greater needs of citizens, particularly the vulnerable.
