Obaseki Appeals For Calm Over Edo Gov Election Result

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has called for calm following the announcement of the governorship election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.
INEC declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the closely contested election. Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who garnered 22,761 votes.
In a statement, Governor Obaseki expressed concerns over what he described as a disregard for due process and the rule of law during the election. He encouraged those who are dissatisfied with the results to pursue legal avenues to express their grievances.
“The last few months have seen various political parties engage in rigorous campaigns to present their candidates to the people of Edo State. This culminated in yesterday’s governorship election.
“One of the strengths of democracy is its power to allow people to choose their leaders. When that power is taken away, it becomes a tragic failure of democracy.
“Unfortunately, the outcome of the September 21st election has left many Edo citizens feeling discouraged and powerless against institutions meant to protect them. I understand why many feel upset.
“However, despite these challenges, I urge my fellow Edo citizens to remain calm and avoid violence or destruction of property in response to this provocation.
“Peace and justice will ultimately prevail, and I call on all those who feel wronged to trust in these principles.
“Clearly, there was a significant disregard for legal processes and rules in this election. But in a democracy, there are legal means to address grievances, and I hope those affected will seek proper resolutions.
“Meanwhile, I urge Edo citizens to continue with their lawful activities, assured of our government’s commitment to your safety and wellbeing.”
