Obasa’s Impeachment: Sanwo-Olu Did Not Interfere in Legislative Matters – Aide

Gboyega Akosile, the spokesperson for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, has dismissed claims that his principal was involved in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Obasa, who was in his third term as Speaker, was removed from office on January 13 over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Representing the Agege Constituency I, Obasa had held the position since 2015.

Reports suggest that Obasa’s relationship with Sanwo-Olu deteriorated after the Lagos Assembly rejected 17 out of the governor’s 39 commissioner nominees in October 2023. Although Obasa denied any rift at the time, the two later attended a reconciliation meeting organized by the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

Responding to allegations of Sanwo-Olu’s involvement in the impeachment, Akosile stated that the governor upholds the principles of separation of powers and avoids political conflicts.

“The governor is a democrat and a gentleman who doesn’t interfere in others’ affairs. He hasn’t discussed any of the incidents you mentioned. These matters don’t concern him,” Akosile told *TheCable*.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu’s focus has always been on the development of Lagos State, not on engaging in unproductive political conflicts. The impeachment was purely a legislative matter,” he added.

Following Obasa’s removal, Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday.
