NNPP rejects Judgement as Abba Yusuf heads to Supreme Court
The court upheld the earlier tribunal ruling, stating that Yusuf’s candidacy violated electoral laws. Consequently, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, was declared the winner.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the platform through which Governor Abba Yusuf won the March 18 governorship election, has rejected the recent Appeal Court decision removing him from office.
The court upheld the earlier tribunal ruling, stating that Yusuf’s candidacy violated electoral laws. Consequently, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, was declared the winner.
Expressing surprise and dissatisfaction with the verdict, NNPP’s Acting National Chairman, Abba Ali, criticized the “miscarriage of justice” during a news conference in Abuja. He highlighted the tribunal’s refusal to consider the party’s evidence and accused the appeal court of sticking to an already settled issue of membership.
Governor Yusuf, who previously unseated the APC in Kano, rejected the judgment, calling it a “miscarriage of justice.” He announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, expressing optimism that justice would be served and his mandate reaffirmed.
The Appeal Court’s decision follows more than six months after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declared Yusuf as the election winner. Notably, the APC candidate conceded defeat based on his faith after INEC’s declaration.
