In response to the severe assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, several workers, and journalists in Owerri, the labor union has outlined a set of demands that they insist must be addressed.

They’ve warned of potential economic disruptions starting from the 8th of November if their demands aren’t met.

During a joint briefing, Deputy Presidents of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrades Adewale Adeyanju and Etim Oko, expressed dismay over the federal government’s silence and criticized the excessive use of force by the Nigeria Police in Owerri to suppress peaceful protests and confiscate evidence.

The labor union expressed deep dissatisfaction with the defense provided by the Imo State Police Command, claiming that their protective custody led to Ajaero’s severe injuries.

They detailed the physical and psychological trauma suffered by Ajaero and demanded an immediate, unbiased medical examination for him and others affected.

The outlined demands include the investigation and removal of the Imo State Police Commissioner, relief of all officers involved in the brutalization, the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, restitution for losses incurred, implementation of previously agreed Industrial Relations issues, and a warning of potential industrial unrest if the conditions aren’t met.

The labor union also clarified the circumstances leading to their peaceful protest in Owerri, refuting claims of disobeying a court order and highlighting the violation of constitutional and international rights regarding freedom of association.

The statement highlighted the violent treatment not only towards Ajaero but also other workers and journalists, the seizure of personal belongings, and the intimidation tactics used, expressing concerns over the criminalization of peaceful gatherings and the violation of fundamental human rights despite Nigeria’s role in international labor conventions.
