The Super Eagles of Nigeria have solidified their standing as contenders in this year’s African Cup of Nations by defeating host nation Ivory Coast 1-0.

Defender William Troost-Ekong secured the victory with a penalty in the 55th minute, capitalizing on a foul against striker Victor Osimhen.

This win follows a previous lackluster performance against Equatorial Guinea, raising optimism among Nigerian fans.

Prior to the decisive goal, both teams had opportunities, but Nigeria had been less clinical in front of goal.

Concerns arose after the unimpressive display against Equatorial Guinea, leading to doubts about progressing past the group stage.

However, the Eagles’ commendable performance against the Elephants has revived hopes for a successful campaign in Ivory Coast.

With four points, Nigeria shares the group’s top spot with Equatorial Guinea, while Ivory Coast trails behind with three points.

Guinea-Bissau has already been eliminated. Although there is room for error with the top four third-placed teams advancing, Ivory Coast must secure a win against Equatorial Guinea in their last match to ensure progression.

The match, witnessed by 49,517 fans, marked a significant increase in attendance compared to the host nation’s opening game.

Despite the favorable atmosphere, Ivory Coast becomes the first host since 2012 to lose a group stage match in AFCON.

Star forward Sebastien Haller’s absence due to injury and coach Jean-Louis Gasset’s lineup changes may have influenced Ivory Coast’s performance.

This encounter was the first between the two sides at AFCON since the 2013 quarter-final, a year when Ivory Coast last lifted the trophy.
