MFormer Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has asserted that Nigeria has sufficient wealth to afford any new national minimum wage.

Lamido noted that if the Nigerian government can allocate approximately N17 trillion for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway without the approval of the National Assembly, then it can meet any minimum wage demand.

Organized labor has rejected the N62,000 proposed by the Nigerian government as the minimum wage. Initially, labor demanded N494,000 but later lowered their demand to N250,000.

Despite ongoing negotiations, state governors have stated they cannot afford the N62,000 proposed by the Federal Government.

In response, Lamido, speaking on Channels Television, remarked: “Nigeria is abundant in resources and capable of resolving any issues, including paying any reasonable amount for a minimum wage.

“If the government can undertake an N17 trillion project that wasn’t budgeted, advertised, tendered, or passed through due process, it indicates that Nigeria has the necessary funds.

“How can a government execute a N17 trillion project without it being in the budget or approved by the National Assembly? This shows there is money in Nigeria. If such a project can be funded, then any minimum wage can be paid.”
