New Emir to Be Named as Kano Assembly Repeals Emirate Law

The Kano State House of Assembly has instructed the kingmakers to select a new Emir following the annulment of the 2019 emirate law.

During their session, lawmakers passed the revised Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024.

This move comes after the deposition of Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano in March 2020 by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, citing non-compliance with gubernatorial directives.

Ganduje utilized the 2019 law, which divided the emirate into five districts, to remove Sanusi from his position.

Aminu Ado Bayero subsequently ascended to the throne.

The Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Yan Gurasa, announced to reporters that with the enactment of the new legislation, Ado Bayero no longer holds the title of Emir of Kano.

The bill awaits the governor’s approval, and there is currently no active Emir in any of the five emirates: Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.

The revised law empowers the governor to call upon the traditional kingmakers to nominate a new ruler.

Meanwhile, the presence of Department of State Services (DSS) operatives near the Emir’s palace aims to prevent any potential unrest following the bill’s passage.

Ado Bayero is reportedly in Ogun state for a private visit with Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, while Sanusi is participating in an investment summit in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state.
