The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has disclosed the names and photos of inmates who went missing following the flood disaster at the Maiduguri correctional centre.

This flood was caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, which had been filled to capacity for several weeks.

The resulting flood displaced many Maiduguri residents and even washed deadly animals, such as crocodiles and snakes, into the area. Among the consequences of this disaster, over 200 inmates were reported to have escaped.

In a statement released on Sunday, Umar Abubakar, the NCS spokesperson, confirmed that 281 inmates were observed missing from the facility after the flooding.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service has observed the flooding currently being experienced in Maiduguri, Borno State, and its environment,” the statement read. It also detailed how the flooding destroyed parts of the correctional facility, including the medium-security custodial centre and staff quarters.

Following the evacuation of inmates to a secure location, the NCS realized that 281 inmates were missing. However, the NCS holds the details and biometrics of the escapees and has made this information available to the public.

Abubakar also reported that seven inmates have been recaptured so far, and efforts are underway to locate and return the rest.

The NCS reassured the public that the flood and escape of inmates pose no threat to public safety as they continue to work with other security agencies to restore order.
