Real Madrid captain Luka Modric has signed a new one-year contract, extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for the upcoming season, the club announced on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old midfielder’s contract now runs until June 30, 2025.

Modric has an impressive record with Real Madrid, having won six Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and two Copa del Rey trophies.

Although he has only started 37 matches in the last two league seasons, Modric remains an essential player for coach Carlo Ancelotti, contributing to Real Madrid’s Champions League and La Liga double last season.

Last month, Modric became the oldest goalscorer in European Championship history, scoring for Croatia against Italy at Euro 2024, though Croatia was eliminated in the group stage.

“I’d like to keep playing forever, but there will probably be a time when I’ll have to retire,” Modric said after the 1-1 draw with Italy that ended Croatia’s campaign. “I’ll keep playing on, I don’t know for how much longer.”

The news of Modric’s contract extension follows the presentation of new star signing Kylian Mbappe to Madrid fans after his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Madrid will begin their league title defense at Real Mallorca on Sunday, August 18.
