A leading aspirant for the seat of Ilorin East/South federal constituency under the platform of the Ruling, All progressive congress (APC), Hajia Saadatu Modibbo-Kawu has commended the leadership All progressive congress (APC) in the State for it’s commitment to Gender Inclusion.
This was contained in a statement obtained by this medium on Friday.
The statement reads in full, “Gender inclusion in governance, has been a topic of national discourse, across Nigeria and political parties, for decades, as most elective positions are currently occupied by men, thus relegating women to the background, as followers, when they can equally lead, and contribute their quota to the development of states, and the nation”.
“The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dared to change the narrative, by paying more than lip service, to the ideal that women need to be significantly involved in governance, to make Nigeria work.”
“The first of such gestures by any political party, was revealed by the National Women Leader of APC, Hon. Dr. Betta Edu, who championed the cause for women, after the party’s maiden NWC session.”
She expressed satisfaction, and stated that the APC took the bold step to mainstream women, and remove barriers to their seeking elective offices, saying that “the decision was reached to encourage all female aspirants against all kinds of limitations”.
I specially appreciate the decision of the national leadership of the APC, for making the nomination forms for the forthcoming 2022 primary elections, free-of-charge, for female aspirants, across the federation.
This has been a stimulus, attracting scores of qualified women to purchase forms, and indicate their interest to represent their people, at various levels. This is a gesture I have also, personally, benefitted from.
Relatedly, Governor Abdulrahman
Abdulrazaq, has an unprecedented belief and faith in the capacity of women. This explains why more than any other government in the history of our state and Nigeria, Kwara has had more women occupying key positions in the public service, as appointees, and in the civil service, under his administration.
He has led the campaign for the advancement of the women folk in governance, from the front, and I continue to applaud his genuine efforts, having been a major beneficiary, alongside many of my colleagues.
Ahead of the APC Primaries, holding from next week, I most passionately appeal to His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, and the APC leadership in Kwara State, to reward the large turnout of women that indicated interest in running for the 2023 general elections, across the 16 LGAs.
They can do this, by ensuring that women get a fair representation, in the outcome of the primaries, to become flag-bearers, across House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate elections.
This is also the first time, that Kwara State would have so many women, interested in seeking elective offices, owing to the opportunities given by our “women-for-leadership positions”, leader.
The outcome of the APC primaries in the State, and across Nigeria, would largely define our great party’s stand, on the inclusion of women in the governance process.
Gov. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has always been exemplary, on the ideal that women too, can perform. Now is the time for the Kwara APC to also show leadership in this regard, for other states to follow.
