Messi to Join Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia as Transfer Talks Resume

Lionel Messi may be set to reunite with his iconic rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League, as reports indicate that fresh discussions have begun regarding a potential move to the Middle East.

The Argentine star had considered a move to Saudi Arabia in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but ultimately chose to join Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). In an interview with TIME Magazine, Messi admitted the Saudi offer was compelling:

“I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league. I know the country, and they’ve created a very powerful competition that can become an important league in the near future.
As the country’s tourism ambassador, it was a destination that attracted me — especially because of how football is growing there and the effort being made to build a top-tier league.”

Since arriving in the United States, Messi has enjoyed success with Inter Miami, winning trophies and individual accolades. However, his current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, and while there is talk of a 12-month extension, no deal has been finalized.

According to TEAMtalk, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has reopened discussions with Messi’s representatives in an effort to reignite interest. If no extension is signed with Inter Miami, Messi would be free to negotiate with other clubs as early as July 1.

If the move happens, Messi would join Ronaldo — currently playing for Al-Nassr — reigniting one of football’s greatest rivalries on Saudi soil.
