On September 26, 2023, Manchester United secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the English League Cup, silencing their critics for the time being.

The team, led by Erik ten Hag, had been heavily criticized after their disappointing early-season performances. Yet, following a narrow Premier League win against Burnley on Saturday, they notched their second consecutive victory, alleviating some of the pressure.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring in the first half, while Casemiro doubled the lead just before halftime. Anthony Martial sealed the victory in the second half.

When Manchester United lifted the League Cup in February, ending a six-year trophy drought, it was anticipated as the beginning of a new era of success at Old Trafford. However, the team has faced a series of challenges, both on and off the pitch.

With three losses in their first five league matches, which severely damaged their title aspirations, Erik ten Hag’s position was increasingly scrutinized until the past four days brought a glimmer of hope.

Ten Hag made a point of acknowledging the crowd and waving to all corners of Old Trafford before kick-off, setting the stage for an inspiring evening as his decision to make seven changes paid off.

Dean Henderson, who recently left United, made his debut for Palace but was forced off injured just 19 minutes into the match. Moments after his departure, United took the lead in the 21st minute when Diogo Dalot’s cross found Garnacho, who scored with a low strike.

Casemiro extended United’s lead six minutes later with a header from Mason Mount’s corner.

United’s third goal came in the 55th minute when Martial scored from Casemiro’s cross.

Sofyan Amrabat, who joined from Fiorentina on deadline day, impressed in his first start for United, shifting from stand-in left-back to his preferred central midfield position after halftime.

Manchester United will seek to continue their winning streak when Crystal Palace returns to Old Trafford for a league match on Saturday.”
