Marseille has officially signed striker Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, the Ligue 1 club announced on Thursday.

The deal, which is reported to be worth approximately 30 million euros ($32.7 million), brings Greenwood to Marseille as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Greenwood, 22, had spent the previous season on loan at Getafe in La Liga, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances. His return to France marks a significant move in his career following a period of controversy.

Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 after allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault. However, prosecutors dropped the charges in February 2023.

Greenwood has always maintained his innocence regarding the allegations, although he acknowledged making mistakes in his relationship.

Marseille’s announcement did not address the past allegations but praised Greenwood as a “precocious talent” and an “English nugget.” The club also did not specify the length of Greenwood’s contract or the exact transfer fee.

Greenwood’s arrival at Marseille follows the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was the club’s top scorer last season.

Marseille, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, will face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on August 3 in Bradford, Greenwood’s hometown. If he participates, it could mark his first match in England since his arrest.
