Man City Secures First Club World Cup, Wraps Up 2023 with Five Trophies
The win, highlighted by Julian Alvarez’s early goal, showcased European clubs’ continued dominance in the competition since 2012.

Manchester City secured their first-ever Club World Cup title, capping off 2023 with five trophies following a convincing 4-0 victory over Fluminense in Jeddah last Friday.
The win, highlighted by Julian Alvarez’s early goal, showcased European clubs’ continued dominance in the competition since 2012.
Despite Fluminense’s hopes fueled by City’s prior Premier League struggles, the vast financial disparities in global football underscored the growing gap between Europe’s elite and the rest of the world.
With a 22-game winning streak by European clubs at the Club World Cup, City’s triumph was sealed with goals from Phil Foden and another from Alvarez in the final 20 minutes.
Notably, Rodri’s injury in the last 20 minutes raised concerns for City, as they have faced defeats in all three Premier League games he missed this season. Nonetheless, this victory marked a pinnacle in City’s successful 15-year journey since the transformative takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Guardiola, making history with a fourth Club World Cup win, celebrated a marquee year that included a treble of Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup, along with the UEFA Super Cup triumph in August.
Foden’s pivotal role in the third goal and his late-season scoring, replacing the injured Erling Haaland, added to the glory of City’s remarkable year.
