Liverpool Defeat Man City to Extend Lead, Amorim Secures First United Win

Liverpool surged to a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League after a 2-0 victory over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah in each half sealed the win for the Reds in a tightly contested match.

Salah struck Liverpool’s second goal after assisting Gakpo’s opener in the 13th minute. Manchester City, struggling to recover from last weekend’s loss to Tottenham, failed to find answers to Liverpool’s relentless attack.

City manager Pep Guardiola made bold changes, dropping first-choice goalkeeper Ederson Moraes and reinstating Ruben Dias to the defense. However, the adjustments couldn’t stop Liverpool’s dominance in the early stages, with Virgil van Dijk hitting the post and Dominik Szoboszlai forcing a save from City’s backup goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega.

Gakpo broke the deadlock, converting Salah’s cross at the far post. Van Dijk missed a chance to double the lead before halftime, while Salah and Gakpo squandered further opportunities in the second half.

Liverpool’s second goal came after Ortega fouled Luis Diaz in the box, gifting Salah the chance to convert from the penalty spot, which he did with ease.

The win lifts Liverpool to 34 points from 13 matches, solidifying their position at the top of the table, nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal. Meanwhile, City’s fourth consecutive league defeat drops them to fifth, an unfamiliar position for Guardiola’s side.

In other matches, Ruben Amorim celebrated his first Premier League victory as Manchester United manager, leading the Red Devils to a 4-0 triumph over Everton. Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee scored two goals each to secure a resounding win.

Elsewhere, Chelsea dismantled Aston Villa 3-0, moving level on points with Arsenal in second place, as the battle for top spots intensifies.
