LG Autonomy: Tinubu reacts to Supreme Court’s judgement

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the constitutional rights of local governments in Nigeria.

He emphasized the crucial role of effective local governance in national development.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu addressed the longstanding issue of ineffective local government administration, calling it a hindrance to national progress.

He stressed the new responsibility on local council leaders to ensure efficient service delivery that directly benefits Nigerians at the grassroots level.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda aims to unite all Nigerians, regardless of differences. This ruling promotes accountability in local governance, empowering citizens to demand results from their elected officials,” President Tinubu stated.

He highlighted essential services such as road maintenance, street lighting, and community security that have suffered due to previous limitations on local government autonomy. Tinubu described the Supreme Court’s decision as a significant move towards strengthening Nigeria’s federal structure and promoting equitable development nationwide.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his efforts in the case.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles and ensuring effective governance beneficial to all Nigerians.
