LG Autonomy: 6 things you need to know about Supreme court’s ruling

The supreme court on Thursday ruled that the federal government should pay allocations directly to local government councils from the federation account.
Here are 6 key points from the judgment.
1. States are mandated to ensure that their local government councils must be democratically
elected.
2. Governors cannot dissolve democratically elected local government councils.
3. Allocations must be paid directly
to the LGs by the federal
government.
4. The said amount must be paid to local government councils that are
democratically elected.
5. The supreme court restrained governors from collecting funds belonging to the LGs when no democratically elected councils are
in place.
6. The supreme court ordered immediate enforcement and compliance with the orders by the state governments and successive
governments henceforth.
