The Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Summa Group, a globally recognized construction company, to develop and build the much-anticipated Lekki-Epe International Airport.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the agreement on Saturday via a post on X, describing it as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and attract international investment.

“This groundbreaking initiative is a crucial part of our vision to improve connectivity in Lagos, stimulate economic expansion, and draw in global investors,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor emphasized that the new airport would ease travel, create job opportunities, and boost business activities across the state.

The plan for the Lekki-Epe International Airport was first announced on October 7, 2022. According to Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on new media, the project will span 3,500 hectares and was initially expected to commence in 2023.

Gawat also noted that the master plan and aeronautical designs had been completed, with ongoing studies to determine funding strategies and other critical considerations before the project is presented to investors.

Designed to handle at least five million passengers annually, the airport will be developed in partnership with both local and international investors.

On January 25, 2024, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the project, stating that preparations for the groundbreaking were underway. He also mentioned that discussions regarding airline operations and federal approvals were progressing.
