The Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned the suspension of Honourable Jimoh Raheem Agboola, member representing Ilorin South State Constituency at the State House of Assembly.
Honorable Agboola was suspended on Tuesday following a motion without notice raised by the House leader, Honorable Abubakar Mogaji Olawoyin, citing some comments made by the latter on a radio program about the deplorable state of road infrastructure in the State.
In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Ashaolu, the Kwara PDP described the suspension of the lawmaker as unlawful and an affront to parliamentary ethics under any democractic dispensation in the world.
Ashaolu said the suspension of Agboola by the Speaker and two House members as a kangaroo pronouncement that cannot be accepted anywhere in the world where democracy thrives.
The Kwara PDP Publicity Secretary noted that “Speaker Danladi who has subjected the Institution of Kwara state house of Assembly to an appendage of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s office, lacks the power to suspend fellow house member who rise to protect the interest of his Constituency by lending his voice to the deplorable level of infrastructure in the State.
“Honorable Agboola is not an appointee of the government or Mr Speaker but was elected by the people of Ilorin South constituency, and therefore, cannot be suspended on baseless accusation. The House should know very well that for any action to be taken against such a man, such action must conform to due process.
“The suspension of Hon. Agboola did not follow due process and it amounts to recklessness and abuse of power by the Speaker. Such illegal action must not be allowed to stand under a democratic setting such as ours. We won’t allow Danladi and Governor Abdulrazaq turn Kwara to a lawless State,” the statement added.
The Kwara PDP therefore demanded the immediate reversal of Agboola’s suspension, stressing that the people of his Constituency have had to endure so much injustice from the Yakubu Danladi-led Assembly, having been deprived representation for a long while. It however called on the people of Ilorin South constituency and followers of Hon. Agboola to remain calm while it employs all means legally acceptable to seek redress.
Speaking further, Ashaolu lamented that under the present administration, governance has been brought to its knees, stressing that the Abdulrazaq-led government was fond of majoring in pettiness, vindictiveness rather than focusing on the reason they were elected by Kwarans.
“There are several germane issues requiring the attention of the State Government but they have chosen to dwell on what is not important and of no benefit to the State. There is growing insecurity and hardship in the State, with the government doing absolutely nothing to address the situation. The Assembly under Yakubu Danladi has also failed to live up to its constitutional mandate of providing checks and balances and waking up the executive arm to its duties,” he lamented.
