Nollywood actor and former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign, Kenneth Okonkwo, has resigned from the party, citing internal crises and failed leadership.

In a statement announcing his resignation, effective February 25, 2025, Okonkwo said the LP had become “non-existent” due to unresolved disputes and poor governance. He criticized the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, for prioritizing personal interests over the party’s survival.

Okonkwo had previously expressed concerns about LP’s direction, warning that it lacked the structure to win elections. He also accused Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, of being unable to secure a mandate even if elected.

The resignation follows a prolonged leadership crisis within LP, which saw multiple legal battles, allegations of financial misappropriation, and disputes over the party’s national convention. Despite court rulings affirming Abure’s leadership, internal factions and INEC’s rejection of the party’s 2024 convention have deepened the turmoil.

Okonkwo, who left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for LP in 2022, said he remains committed to good governance and is open to joining another political platform.
