Salman Dogo Garba has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police in Kano State, following the promotion of CP Ussain Gumel to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIG).

Garba assumed his new role on Monday, June 24, during a handover and farewell ceremony held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Pompai.

Reflecting on his tenure from May 2, 2023, to June 24, Gumel highlighted several challenges, including managing the 2023 state governorship election amid a heated political environment and an unpredictable security situation.

He noted that the period following the election, including the pronouncement of election verdicts and court processes up to the Supreme Court, presented significant challenges.

Additionally, there were attempts by political actors to politicize security issues surrounding the Kano State Emirate Council.

Gumel also faced various security threats, such as armed robbery, thuggery (Daba), car theft, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, which posed risks to public safety and hindered governance and socioeconomic development.

Despite these challenges, he stated that the state command remained professional and committed to maintaining peace and order.

As he transitions to his new role, Gumel expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and his colleagues in Kano State for their support.

He urged the officers and men of the Force to extend their support to the new police commissioner to ensure his success.
