Kingmakers in Kano state are currently meeting at the government house to select a new Emir.

According to TheCable, Kano Governor Abba Yusuf is attending the meeting with the kingmakers.

This meeting follows the repeal of the Kano State Emirate Council Law of 2019.

On Thursday, state legislators passed the amended Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024.

The new bill abolishes the five emirates and all related appointments or offices.

It also requires the governor to restore the previous Kano emirate system.

In May 2019, the house of assembly approved amendments to the Kano State Emirate Council Law, which led to the division of the emirate.

This legislation was reportedly intended to reduce the powers of then-Emir Muhammadu Sanusi.

Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje signed the bill into law, creating five emirates: Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi, each with its own Emir.

In March 2020, Ganduje deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano for allegedly disobeying lawful instructions from the governor’s office.

It is expected that Yusuf might sign the new bill today after the meeting and announce a new Emir of Kano.
