Journalists charged to ensure fair, balance report in 2023 election

As the 2023 general elections draws nearer, Journalist and media Practitioners in Kwara state have been advised to ensure balance, fair and accurate report in the coming election and electioneering process.

Dr Adebola Bakare from University of Ilorin, gave the advise on Monday at ‘A 1-Day media executives advocacy roundtable in media independence and government accountability.’

The roundtable discussion which was organized by Albarika 89.9 FM in collaboration with Wole Soyinka center for investigative Journalism and MacArthur Foundation, took place at Sity Inn hotel, GRA, Ilorin the state capital.

Dr. Bakare who stressed on the role of Media in 2023 election said “2023 election is spectacular because it will be the first election under a new electoral act, it is the second time that the sitting president will not be contesting, 2023 election is the first time Nigeria will have multiple front runners presidential Candidates and there’s is divisional tendency in the coming election.

He added that, “Media is responsible to provide the platform for debate for transmission of policies program and manifestos of candidate to the people.

“Media should create an avenue to educate and sensitive electorates about the new electoral law.

Dr Bakare, however charged journalists to avert from bias election reportage, noting that media serve as the watchdog of the society.

Also speaking, the GM of Albarka FM, Dr Abdulrahseed Adigun encouraged journalists who were drawn from conventional and new media in Kwara state, to never allow value judgement to cripple their profession.
