Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called for an investigation into the malfunction of the electoral body’s result viewing portal (IReV) during the 2023 elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Jega highlighted the inability of INEC to immediately upload presidential election results on February 25, 2023, as per section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022.

Protests ensued from political parties due to the manual collation of results and the delayed announcement of winners.

Jega acknowledged INEC’s efforts but suggested that the IReV may have been compromised by desperate politicians.

He expressed concern about politicians attempting to outsmart INEC by undermining the technological advancements introduced to ensure transparency in the electoral process.

Jega stressed the need for INEC to provide more information about the IReV’s failure, even proposing a thorough public inquiry.

Despite acknowledging the confidence of the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, Jega asserted that the blame for the IReV issues would fall on INEC.

He urged INEC to investigate the matter comprehensively once court cases related to the 2023 elections are resolved.
