The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has advised Nigerian youths to prioritize demonstrable skills over certificates for employment, cautioning that university degrees will soon no longer guarantee jobs.

Delivering a convocation lecture titled “Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning – Prerequisites of the Digital Age” at Kwara State University, Malete, Oloyede highlighted the emergence of new opportunities in the high-tech sector, emphasizing the need for skills not traditionally taught in conventional schools.

He stated that degrees would no longer be the sole assurance of employment, with demonstrable skills becoming essential. Oloyede stressed the significance of the triad – learning, unlearning, and relearning – in adapting to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The JAMB registrar underscored the dynamic nature of the information age, pointing out that various jobs, including typists, receptionists, and traditional printers, are on the verge of extinction.

He urged individuals to prepare for the challenges of the information age through lifelong learning and a willingness to adapt.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed optimism that the lecture would expand the horizons of the audience, acknowledging the need for educational institutions to prepare graduates for the ever-changing digital age.
